The Immigration Two-Step

PRESIDENT Bush proved this week that he wasn’t entirely disappointed last November when the Republican Party lost control of the United States Congress.

The comprehensive immigration “reform” touted by the president Thursday is a path to citizenship for the estimated 12 million illegals inside America’s borders.

The chutzpah of the two major parties is breathtaking. Republicans and Democrats all across the country find this bill unacceptable, either because it rewards lawbreakers with an amnesty or because the guest worker program would threaten labor unions. Yet the oligarchs in the U.S. Senate pushed forward with the bill in spite of what they must have known would be a firestorm of outrage.

It wasn’t. Sadly, it’s no surprise that the announcement of a transatlantic trade harmonization agreement with the EU barely caused a ripple in the public consciousness, even though the Constitution that our president swore to uphold and protect requires him to get the approval of the Senate before entering into such agreements.
