We Overlooked This One

The press has been consistent in calling the shootings at Virginia Tech last week the worst school massacre in American history. We missed one.

The Bath School disaster is the name given to three bombings in Bath Township, Michigan, USA, on May 18, 1927, which killed 45 people and injured 58. Most of the victims were children in second to sixth grades attending the Bath Consolidated School. Their deaths constitute the deadliest act of mass murder in a school in U.S. history.

We’ve also overlooked a number of massacres in the 17th through 19th centuries — white on Indian, Indian on white, Indian on Indian — that far outnumbered the 32 plus one who died last Monday.

  1. This May 18th will be the 80th anniversary of the Bath School Disaster. I wonder if that might be significant?
