Now, this is interesting. Baseball has agreed to stage a 16-nation world tournament next March. Tentatively, the participating countries, by bracket: Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China; Puerto Rico, Cuba (for now), Panama and probably Italy; the United States, Canada, Mexico and likely South Africa; and the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Australia and the Netherlands.
The U.S. would have to be the favorite, but I wouldn’t be suprised to see the Dominican Republic win. Imagine–a lineup with Albert Pujols, Vlad Guerrero, Sammy Sosa, Manny Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano, and Miguel Tejada, and a pitching staff anchored by Pedro Martinez and Octavio Dotel.
